Margaretann Bennett

Current work explores the West Coast landscape through use of mixed media where I create a surface of rich colour and sumptuous texture with paint, often incorporating layers of delicate paper which I pre-colour and mark. My approach is intuitive rather than analytical - there is deliberate tension between areas of abstraction and finer detail. Most works are a distillation of collected experiences into a visual unity and an evocation, rather than depiction of place. Much of the landscape of the North West is imbued with a sense of passing time and lives lived. I seek to convey this through a sense of desolation and loneliness, where the image is given meaning by retained elements where man has left his mark, for example in lines and shapes created by old stone walls, sheepfolds and steadings.
